Advisers continue to make a play for defensive assets FundsNetwork sales data reveals

The Global sector held onto the top spot in April, according to the latest data from FundsNetwork.

The first-place ranking of the Global sector indicates that advisers are continuing to allocate heavily towards more defensive assets. This is evidenced by the make-up of the top ten bestselling sectors which features global and UK equities as well as Mixed Investment sectors.

Fundsmith Equity was the overall bestselling fund on FundsNetwork in April, as well as the bestselling ISA fund, reflecting there is an increased demand for global equities. Fidelity Cash Fund on the other hand, came in as the second bestselling fund overall, showing there is still an element of client and adviser sentiment that continues to remain cautious in 2019, looking for mixed investments.

FundsNetwork Pension sales point to evidence that this cautious sentiment is extending to long-term asset allocation decisions, with the top ten pension bestsellers reflecting a range of globally diverse mixed investments, with a preference for equities.

Paul Richards, Head of Sales at FundsNetwork, comments: “It is not surprising that advisers and their clients continue to allocate towards defensive assets as well as investments that offer diversification benefits when we take into consideration the ongoing backdrop of political and market uncertainty.

“That being said, our latest sales data in April was dominated by global equities as well as an increased appetite for UK equities that are selling at a Brexit discount, with attractive valuations. As we look forward to the rest of 2019 we would still expect advisers to continue to tread cautiously whilst also staying vigilant for bright spots of opportunity.”
